Ice // And The Truth About Keeping It

The drive out to Polihale takes about as long as the drive from one end of this island to the other, and the last five miles will rearrange your suspension. Nobody waking up to a cooler all filled with all melted ice. Which means the cooler is the whole trip — if the ice goes, you're driving back to Waimea.

YETI Tundra 65

Three inches of PermaFrost insulation — pressure-injected polyurethane in the walls and the lid — inside a rotomolded shell, with a freezer-quality gasket running the full lid perimeter. Thirty-nine cans at a 2:1 ice-to-can ratio, or about 56 pounds.

YETI publishes no ice-retention number, and that's honest of them, because the number is mostly you. Here's how you get the long one: pre-chill the box overnight, pack it two parts ice to one part everything else, and keep the lid shut. Do that and people report a week and past it.

The Reef // Masks That Don't Leak

Almost everybody's first snorkel here is a rental mask, and almost everybody's first snorkel here involves a mask full of water. That's not bad luck. A rental was fitted to somebody else's face and then to two hundred more.

Over Under Fun — Ulua and Keiki

Over Under is a Hawaiʻi outfit. The Ulua is the adult mask; the Keiki is a full-coverage mask cut for faces roughly four to fifteen. Both run shatter-resistant tempered glass with anti-fog, a soft silicone skirt that holds its seal through temperature swings, a nose pocket, and silicone straps you can actually adjust with wet hands.

Fit-test it before you buy: hold the mask to your face without the strap, breathe in through your nose, let go. If it stays put on its own, it fits you. Sixty seconds at the counter instead of finding out at Tunnels. One note on sizing — the Keiki is cut for a child's face, not a scaled-down adult one, so a small adult should still try the Ulua.

Water // You Have To Carry It In

The thing nobody tells you is that Kauaʻi is covered in fresh water you can't drink. Leptospirosis lives in the streams — it gets in through a cut or your mouth, and it puts people in Wilcox every year. Boiling works. Filtering works. Cupping your hands does not.
